When running location-based advertising campaigns, it’s not enough to just target an area—you need to ensure that users are actually in that location. That’s where Location Precision Validation comes in.
At Targetoo, we validate the quality of location data to ensure that your ads reach the right audience with the highest possible accuracy. Here’s how it works.
Why Does Precision Matter?
In mobile advertising, location data can be highly accurate (like GPS) or approximate (like from IP addresses). The more accurate the data, the better your targeting—and the less waste in your budget.
However, not all location data is created equal, and blindly trusting coordinates in ad bid requests can lead to misplacement, fraud, and poor campaign performance.
Targetoo’s Precision Levels
We classify location precision into three levels:
High Precision
-
Based on validated GPS coordinates with at least 4 decimal digits.
-
Cross-checked against the IP-derived location.
-
Only served if user opt-in and GPS data are trustworthy.
-
Best for tight geofencing, store visit campaigns, and premium targeting.
Medium Precision
-
Based on GPS coordinates with 2 decimal digits (approx. 500m).
-
User hasn’t opted in, so location is less precise.
-
Acceptable for broader location-based strategies where exact pinpointing isn’t critical.
Low Precision
-
Based on non-validated coordinates or IP-derived locations.
-
Used as fallback when GPS isn’t available or is too imprecise.
-
Suitable for broad awareness campaigns, but not recommended for performance goals like footfall tracking.
Our Validation Process
Targetoo doesn’t take lat:long data at face value. We run several filters before labeling a location as “high precision”:
-
GPS Coordinates Check
-
Must have at least 4 decimal digits.
-
Compared against location inferred from the user’s IP.
-
-
Distance Matching
-
The GPS and IP-inferred coordinates must be within 10 meters of each other.
-
-
Flood Protection
-
If we see more than 5 bid requests from the same coordinates within 30 seconds, it’s flagged as suspicious and downgraded to low precision.
-
-
Exchange Integrity
-
Some SSPs are automatically downgraded due to suspicious location patterns.
-
Campaign Configuration Tips
When setting up your geofenced campaign, you can choose your desired level of location precision:
-
High Precision Campaigns: Ideal for store visits, DOOH lift studies, or proximity triggers.
-
Medium Precision Campaigns: Good for location-aware messaging with broader tolerance.
-
Low Precision Campaigns: Only use if you’re prioritizing scale over location accuracy.
📌 Note: Any coordinates with a calculated accuracy worse than 50km are automatically excluded to avoid “data sinks” and irrelevant targeting.
Location Precision Validation ensures that your location-based targeting is both trustworthy and GDPR-compliant. By using validated GPS data and filtering out unreliable signals, Targetoo helps you run smarter campaigns, reduce waste, and improve ROI.
